Animal execution as a form of legal retribution?

This article appeared in the Star and in the Cape Times on March 3.

Summary: A dog has been sentenced to death by hanging in Rukwa, Tanzania. Its only "crime" is that its owner chose to give it the name of "Immigration" as an apparently antagonistic gesture against the immigration department of Tanzania.

Resolution: The dog has now been executed by shooting.

UPDATE: Inquiry ordered into dog's execution

This case, which seems to have set a legal precedent in which innocent animals can be executed as a form of punishment, highlights the plight of animals in our society. Not only are they not adequately protected from cruel treatment by any laws in Africa, but now they must also face the possibility that the law will use them as a means of punishment to offenders! It's not as if the animal itself is being accused of any perceived crime.

In a sociey where young children are raped in the supposed safety of their schools and the aged are murdered in their homes, is it a wonder that"humanity" puts so low a price on the lives of innocent animals? Sick. Sick. Sick. Sick. Sick.

the mind boggles, all this support for a dog yet a highly probably pro-abortion stand? MMmmm does NOT compute. while there may be exceptions to the rule, the death sentence and abortion are both are barbaric, and the same thing the only difference being that a foetus (and dog) have no say

Killing a dog because of it's name is wrong. The owner gave the dog the name, and should thus be the party to take the responsebility. Killing over a name is too much. If the dog killed someone, and it was not a result of provocation, then killing the dog might make some sence. But even in this case, the owner of the dog needs to be punished. Esentially, you can, in a big way, determine the nature of your dog. Killing a dog because of it's name, say more about the intellectual stand of the comunity at large.

I think it stinks to treat a defenceless animal in such a way.
Maybe it is time to shoot those people that are so quick to want to hurt poor defenceless animals.
Imagine if you were an animal that had a gun, you could shoot back. Imagine how those same people treat human beings.
They make me want to "VOMIT". How can you stand to look at such cute faces and then treat them like dirt.

I am so fed up with hearing people say "what about the people?". So we should all just stop caring about animals just because there are so many people suffering too? Why not care about both? Since when does it detract from human rights to promote animal's rights too? If anything, caring for animals benefits people by promoting compassion for ALL living creatures.

I agree with Alec. Apart from anything else, it's a freedom of speech issue. Naming a dog is an form of expression / speech. Sticks and stones break bones but names never hurt anyone physically -- unlike idiot immigration / legal thugs.

it seems that some are not amused that a dog should have this attention, when millions are starving around the world. the major argument here is that a man of the courts sentenced an innocent animal to die. think about it. it's like killing a child if it's parents commit a crime. and in this case the prosecuting immigration officer told the court that Kachela mischievously gave the name of this "highly respected and law-abiding" government department. the implications are astounding. obviously dog killing is a highly respected and law abiding job. i think both humans and animals should be protected.

This is an unacceptable act. It is typical of a Government organisation, impotent and selfconscious of its actions in the public domain. So what if the guy doesn't like theimmigration dept? So what if the dog's name was Immigration? In the world of today, where we are losing touch with nature at an ever increasing rate, we can't afford to commit such heinous crimes against ourselves and our environment. The judge(wannabe judge) should be dismissed from his position an be refused public service employment ever again. That is unfortunately the only sensible thing to do. One can't exactly go and kill him for his stupidity. That would be as bad as killing a dog because of its name. What a bunch of absolutely useless idiots Tanzania seem to have in their justice department.

Let me guess... The Tanzanian Government obviously hasn't got any better things to do than to sentence a poor dog to death. Geeeeeez, what is this damn world coming to??? Why don't they start considering convicting ACTUAL prosecuters? I mean, what about all the swindlers, thieves, murderers and rapists? It seems that THEY are innocent! Why should a dog be tried for something that he had no choice or say in. I sincerley hope that the international abuse of animals commity or any such organisation that exists reacts to this in a vigouris manner and prevent this from happening again.

This must be one of the most pathertic case ever tried. How the hell can you sentence the dog to death for the owners arogance! If it is such an issue the owner should take the blame and not the poor defenceless, speechless animal. What happened to the intenational law of have a fair and justified trial. The so called educated people should really think again before react. I would really love to see what happens to someone that is accused of murder. I can't believe people are making innocent animals pay for the sins of the humans. Is it the dog's fault that his owner called him that name?
